A Few Reminders

Some of you may be experiencing problems with your student account. Some students may have been wrongly charged for a residential dining plan and/or other charges. We are working with the Bursar’s Office to correct any issues with student accounts. If you have a question about housing charges listed on your account, please contact us at 256-782-5122 for more information.

We would also like to remind everyone that residence halls will close on December 10 at 10:00 p.m. for nongraduating residents. Graduating residents must check out by 10:00 p.m. on December 16. Halls will reopen on January 10 at 9:00 a.m.

Lastly, Res Life Productions presents Chicken & Waffles at Effina’s Tuscan Grille TODAY from 8:00 p.m. – 12:00 am. Take a break from the books, and relax before finals. It’s FREE but there are only a FEW tickets left. Drop by the Housing Office in 103 Bibb Graves to reserve your FREE MEAL!

Horror Story Contest Winner!

Congratulations to Derrick Robinson, the 2011 winner of the Halloween Horror Story Contest! Please see his winning essay below!

Good 'ol Mountain Street. Yea, I would say it looks good now. Waffle House, Effina's, and the Japanese restaurant all new additions to the street. It's nice to see people jogging up and down the street, cars passing and everyone is happy. It seems as if everyone forgot about Josh Evans and Christy Hall. I know I remember, ten years was not that long ago to me. I was a student here at Jacksonville State when it happened. Not only that but I knew Josh. He stayed down the hall from me when I stayed at Crow my freshman year. I didn't know Christy so well. Only seen her on occasions and that was when she was with Josh. It's sad what happen to the two of them, I'm surprised the community forgot. Or maybe the community wants to forget what happened. If you never heard the story of Josh and Christy I'll go ahead and tell you this time, but this will be my only time telling it to you.

Now from the outside Josh Evans and Christy Hall were your typical college love birds. They both were well known across campus and would be seen together at the occasional sporting event or frat party. Now one place you were guranteed of seeing the two was on Mountain Street. Every night Josh and Christy could be seen jogging on Mountain Street and around the JSU campus. If you saw Josh, you saw Christy. The two would jog up and down Mountain Street then stop at Sparkman Hall where Christy lived and would sit outside on the steps and talk for hours. Until the night of October 31, 2001 that is.

Story has it that Josh went to Sparkman to meet up with Christy for their nightly jog. When Christy didn't show Josh got worried and began calling Christy's cell phone. Christy informed Josh that she went to a haunted house in the mountains with some friends and she would return shortly. She told him to wait for her at Sparkman on the front steps. Well, Christy never showed. Josh sat out at Sparkman all night. The next day it was reported that some body parts had been found on Mountain Street mutilated and only the heads and feet were found. No other body parts. The local paper nor TV 24 reported that it was in fact Christy and her friends but everyone on JSU's campus knew it was.

The day after the body parts were found Josh seemed very distant to everybody. He didn't talk to anyone. As a matter of fact, all he did was sit outside Sparkman Hall every night for three months straight. Then one night Josh didn't show. He didn't show the next night either.No one seemed to have seen Josh anywhere on campus. His body was later found in his room at Crow hall. Josh had took his life. The only thing Josh left behind was a note saying "Looking for Christy".

Now if you walk Mountain Street at a certain time at night it's said you can see Josh still doing his nightly run. I don't believe much in ghost, but I can't deny what my eyes have seen. Heck, I've even seen him. I've seen him sitting on the steps at Sparkman still waiting for Christy. I've even seen him standing in the middle of the quad at night. Just standing there. Some say you can see Christy at the library at night, or hear her voice calling for Josh on Mountain Street at night. It's like they are still trying to find each other. Their souls are trying to unite for their nightly run. So if you happen to see Josh or Christy one night, don't be alarmed. Just point them in the direction of Mountain Street and hope they reunite.

Early Move In Updates: Gamecock Orientation

Students participating in Gamecock Orientation on August 24, 2011, will be able to move into their fall assignments once orientation is completed. The designated move-in times for August 24 are 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Students who have previously attended Gamecock Orientation will be able to move in on the New Student Move-In Day, August 26, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Women participating in sorority recruitment will still be able to move in on August 24, 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. We apologize for any confusion or inconvenience and look forward to serving our students this year.

Avoid the Void!

Did you know that August 8, 2011 is the payment due date for all charges, including, tuition, housing and meal plans?

If you do not pay your balance, have financial aid in place, or are not previously enrolled in a payment plan by August 8, 2011, your classes, housing assignment, and meal plan will be voided. This means your classes will be dropped and you will be removed from your fall housing assignment.

In order to AVOID the VOID, make sure you take care of all fees before the payment due date.

If you are removed from your housing assignment, you will not be able to reregister for classes until August 22, 2011. Once you are able to reregister, you will need to reapply for housing, submit proof of classes, and pay all fees before housing can be reassigned. You will need to visit the Housing Office in 103 Bibb Graves or call 256-782-5122 to re-claim a housing assignment.

Please note: University Housing and Residence Life can neither guarantee your previous assignment will be available nor can the department guarantee any housing assignment.

If you reregister for classes and fail to reapply for housing, your account will be charged for housing.

Tips for Move-In Day

Check out our helpful tips to make move-in day easier!

Are you still unsure what to pack? Visit our blog post with our suggested packing list.

Dress comfortably on the big day and wear sensible shoes.

Bring a cart or dolly if you have one at home. We won't be able to provide these and this will be helpful for larger items.

Stay hydrated. August in Alabama isn't known for it's cool temperatures, so be prepared for a hot and sticky day.

Expect help. Every year students and staff volunteer to assist new students with move-in.

Be patient. Moving is always a slow undertaking. We will do our part to help make the experience as painless as possible.

Look for the Housing Prize Patrol who will be driving throughout campus looking for people to answer JSU trivia questions. Answer correctly and win prizes!

There will also be cooling stations at each residence hall with free water!

Get excited! You have a big year ahead of you so hit the ground running!

Be on the lookout for COCKY DAZE information too! This is Housing's Welcome Weekend for our residents. A full list of details will be available soon!

Only students participating in the following sports/organizations may move into the fall assignment early. If you are participating in early move in, it is important that you are officially registered with the appropriate department before attempting to move in.

Soccer Move-In:

Tuesday, August 2, 2011, Time: 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm.
Players reporting for practice will move into their fall assignments.

Football Move-In:

Thursday, August 4, 2011. Time: TBA
Players reporting for practice will move into Crow Hall for football camp.
If your fall assignment is in Crow Hall, you will move into your fall assignment.
If you fall assignment is not in Crow Hall, you will relocate on Monday, August 22, 2011 between 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Remember, you may not need every item on this list. The following items are things you should think about bringing.

What to Bring -Sleeping

Sheets (twin, regular sized, at least two sets)
Comforter/Duvet set
Blanket
Mattress Pad

What to Bring - Looking Your Best

Towels and washcloths (at least two sets)

Shower shoes/flip flops

You won't have room for your entire wardrobe, but you can trade your warm weather clothing for your cold weather clothing when you go home or during Thanksgiving break and then trade back at Spring Break or another trip home. Computer, printer, cords, and accessories, including CDs/Flash Drives, surge protector, printer paper, and ink cartridges

What to Bring - Cleaning

Cleaning supplies, including detergent, fabric softener, stain removers, lint brushes, iron, small ironing board, laundry marking pen, drying rack, and plenty of quarters for the laundry machines

Helpful Shopping Tips for Move In

The Department of University Housing and Residence Life knows that move in can be a stressful time! Here are some tips we've found that can help make this an easy day for you!

Shopping Tips:

Contact your roommate in advance to avoid duplicate items. Your roommate's email address can be found online with your housing assignment information.

Make a budget and stick to it. Shopping for your new home can get expensive.

Leave valuable items at home. If it is irreplaceable to you, do not risk bringing it into a communal living environment.

Write down the make, model, and serial number of valuable items such as bicycles, computers, stereos, televisions, and other electronics. Leave a copy of this information at home in a safe place. In the event that something is stolen, having this information increases the chance of recovering the item. You may also want to photocopy the contents of your wallet, including your credit/debit cards, driver's license, and insurance card and leave it at home. If your wallet is stolen or lost, you can refer to the photocopy to replace those items.

The University Police Department also has a form you can fill out while on campus to document serial numbers and other information regarding your valuables. The form can be found here.

Take inventory of what you already own and what you can borrow from older siblings or friends.

If you are traveling a great distance, consider purchasing some items once you arrive in Jacksonville. Don't worry about remembering everything, we have stores in Jacksonville, Anniston, Oxford, and Gadsden that will provide you with everything you need.

You can always pick up items on your next trip home or have your family send stuff to you.

It is easier to store duffel bags than luggage. Bulky pieces of luggage will take up space in your room.

We will provide an additional packing list. You may not need everything on the list, but we encourage you to think about what you will need to make your new room your new home.

New Students: Wondering About Your Housing Assignment?

We are currently assigning NEW students for fall 2011 - spring 2012. Because May 1 is our priority deadline for applications and roommate requests, we strive to allow as many students as possible to apply before our priority deadline.

We will begin sending out assignment emails on or around May 15. All information will be sent to your JSU email account. The email will contain your room assignment and roommate's name and email address (if applicable or assigned at the time of the email). We will continue to send out assignment emails every two weeks after that point. You will probably receive the email more than once, but we want to keep you as informed as possible.

The assignment email will contain information about move in dates, payment deadlines, room change information and many other items. Please read the email so that you are prepared when you arrive on campus.

Haven't applied yet? No problem! You will need the residence hall application, which can be found here. You will submit your application with the $150 nonrefundable application fee to:

Residents living in Crow, Curtiss, Dixon, Fitzpatrick, Logan and Patterson CANNOT SQUAT (select the SAME room for next year) because these halls are reserved for freshmen only.

These residents are able to select their rooms today. Selection began at 12:00 P.M. and students have until 12:00 A.M. to complete their room selection.

However, not everyone can select their room at the same time. Selection is determined by the date and time of when you submitted your Returning Student Application. When you log in to the online system, you should be able to see what time you are able to select your room.

Tomorrow, March 3, beginning at 12:00 P.M., students who have not selected a room assignment will be able to select their room. However, just like the group today, not everyone can select their room at the same time. Selection is determined by the date and time of when you submitted your Returning Student Application. Housing Reapplication for 2011 – 2012 is now ONLINE!

Students wishing to live on campus for fall 2011 – spring 2012 will need to follow the steps outlined below to complete reapplication.

1. During the week of February 21 – 25, you will need to log onto https://housing.jsu.edu/WebPatron/Default.asp.

2. You will use your MyJSU user name and password to log on.

3. Follow the steps and complete the Returning Student Application.

4. Submit your completed application.

During the week of February 28 – March 4, residents will have designated dates to reapply for housing. See the dates below for your day to reapply. Reapplication will be open each day from 12:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m.

1. February 28: I want to keep my SAME assignment next year! (Includes: Campus Inn Efficiencies, College, Colonial Arms, Daugette, Jax, Leadership Houses, Pannell, Penn House, Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity House, Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity House, Sparkman, and Stadium Tower)

2. March 1: I live in a Campus Inn One Bedroom apartment! (Residents of Campus Inn One Bedroom apartments are not able to squat due to the closing of Campus Inn One Bedroom for renovations.)

3. March 2: I’m NOT able to keep my same assignment next year, what about me? (Residents of Crow, Curtiss, Dixon, Fitzpatrick, Logan, and Patterson are not able to squat. Residents may apply for any available assignment in Daugette, Sparkman, Stadium Tower or on-campus apartment.)

4. March 3: I forgot to select my room on my designated date! (Residents who did not select their room during the first three days may do so on March 3.)

5. March 4: I want to live in designated Greek Housing next year! (Members of Alpha Xi Delta, Alpha Omicron Pi, Delta Zeta, Phi Mu, and Zeta Tau Alpha may submit their applications for Stadium Tower on this day. Members of Pi Kappa Phi and Sigma Phi Epsilon that did not squat may apply on this day also.)

During the week of March 7 – 11, residents may change rooms, search for new roommates, or make any changes to their submitted application. Only residents who have submitted a completed application may change rooms or edit their application.

Winter Break Closing Information

Residence Halls will close on Saturday, December 11, 2010, at 10:00 p.m. for nongraduating residents (except for Continuous Housing Halls). Residents will be required to vacate the building and no one will be allowed to enter the building until Tuesday, January 4, 2011, at 9:00 a.m. Residents may leave their personal belongings in their rooms; however, the Department of University Housing and Residence Life is not responsible for theft or damages of personal belongings. Graduating residents may reside in the hall until Friday, December 17, 2010, at 10:00 p.m.

All residents that plan on leaving for the holiday break, including Stadium Tower residents, must complete the check-out process with their Resident Assistant (RA). All Stadium Tower residents not planning on leaving for the holiday break must fill out an application for winter break housing with their Residence Life Coordinator (RLC).

In order to continue residing in the residence hall for the Spring 2011 semester, the resident must complete the following:

Check-Out Procedures:

1. Contact the RA to set up a mutually convenient date and time to check-out of the assigned room (residents must meet with their RA at least 24 hours before leaving for the break). At check-out time the resident’s room will be inspected.

2. Unplug all electrical appliances, microwaves, refrigerators, computers, alarm clocks, irons, stereos, etc.

3. Turn off cooling/heating units.

4. Do not leave electrical appliances on the floor.

5. Do not leave dirty dishes, dirty clothes, and open food containers.

6. Do not leave perishable foods.

7. Lock all windows.

8. First floor residents should lower and close all blinds. Upper floor residents should lower and open all blinds.

9. Clean the room (i.e., mop, dust, sweep, and properly dispose of all trash).

10. Dispose of open food items properly.

11. Sign the Winter Check-Out/-In Form and give the room key to the assigned RA.

12. Failure to complete check-out procedures will result in charges of $100.00 (i.e., $50.00 fine for an improper check out and a $50 fee for a lock change).

Check-In Procedures:

1. Check-in hours for Tuesday, January 4, 2011, are from 9:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.

2. Check in will take place at the front desk of each hall. Only residents who have been confirmed may sign the census and obtain their room key.

3. Nonconfirmed residents must seek permission from the Housing Office, 103 Bibb Graves, to check in. If approved, provide Residence Life Staff with the proper documentation, sign the census, and obtain the room key.

If a resident plans on moving out of the residence hall and not returning for the spring semester, please complete the following:

1. Complete an Agreement Release Request at the Department of University Housing and Residence Life located in Bibb Graves Hall, Room 103. Residents should review the Agreement Release Request form as he/she may be subject to a monetary penalty and/or appropriate fees.

2. If a resident vacates his/her assignment and remains enrolled as a JSU student for the Spring 2011 semester, there will be a monetary penalty. If applicable, the resident’s $100.00 deposit will be forfeited and he/she will be required to pay the remainder of the nine- or eleven-month lease agreement.

3. All nongraduating residents must move out before December 11, 2010, at 10:00 p.m. All graduating residents must move out before December 17, 2010, at 10:00 p.m. Failure to move out by the assigned date will result in a $50 per day hold-over charge posted to the resident’s account.

Move-Out Procedures:

1. In advance, contact the RA to schedule a mutually convenient time to vacate the room.

2. Clean the room (i.e., dust, sweep, and mop).

3. Empty and clean the Microfridge® unit (if applicable).

4. Ensure that the room has the original furniture and fixtures in their original position at the time of Fall 2010 check in.

5. Remove any decals/stickers, including adhesive residue, nails, tacks, tape, etc. from walls, floor, ceiling, and/or window. Residents will be liable for any damage to the room, room furniture, and/or fixtures.

6. Remove all trash from room.

7. Empty all drawers and closets and leave both open for inspection by a RA.

8. Remove all personal property from room.

9. At the agreed upon time, the RA will inspect the room for compliance with these regulations. Once the inspection is complete, residents will be allowed to sign the Winter Check-Out/-In Form and return their key.

NOTE: Failure to complete any of the above referenced cleaning responsibilities will result in the resident’s account being charged appropriate monetary penalties (see list of Residence Hall & Apartment Damages Charges in the Guide to Residence Living 2010-2011).

Important Information Regarding HBO

The Department of University Housing and Residence Life has always tried to offer accommodations and amenities that residents find enjoyable. One amenity that is offered to residents is cable television. For the past seven years, the cost of cable has been included within the housing rate for each residence hall or apartment. The current cable plan through Cable One includes standard cable (approximately sixty channels) and HBO. However, due to circumstances beyond our control, HBO will no longer be available for residents, effective January 2011. We will continue to provide the standard cable plan. Residence halls will remain open; students are not required to leave, but encouraged to take a break from campus. We will have staff members available to assist you during the break, but there will be no visitation during the break. Visitation will resume on Sunday, November 28 at 2:00pm.

Salvation on Sand Mountain Events

"Beginning in summer 2010, Jacksonville State University will implement a summer reading program which will consist of all first–year students reading a common book before classes beginning in the fall. This program will be an attempt to both unite this freshman class and to promote their thoughtfulness on a variety of issues. Students will discuss the assigned text and complete assignments based on the text through both their English 100 and 101 classes and their Freshman Orientation (LS 100 and LS 104) courses during the fall semester. Additionally, students participating in the C.O.C.K.Y. experience through the Department of University Housing and Freshman Forum will have the opportunity for book related group discussions outside of the classroom.

Jacksonville State University has chosen Salvation on Sand Mountain by Dennis Covington (15th Anniversary Edition) as its first selection of the summer reading program. Covington is slated to provide a follow up lecture on campus during the fall semester, which will afford this group of first year students a great opportunity to hear, first – hand, about the author’s actual experiences while writing his book. Additionally, this lecture will serve as a chance for students to ask questions of Covington and gain knowledge of his insight on the issues dealt with throughout this text."

On Wednesday, September 22, Dr. Hardy Jackson will present a lecture on "Southern Religion and Salvation on Sand Mountain." Dr. Jackson will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Leone Cole Auditorium.

Monday, October 4, author Dennis Covington will speak to the public at 7:00 p.m. in Leone Cole Auditorium. Mr. Covington will also meet with smaller groups as well as the winner of the Salvation on Sand Mountain essay contest. Admission is free for both events.

Please join us on Saturday, September 11 from 11:00am-12:30pm for a light reception (brunch type foods/hors d'oeuvres) in the new Stadium Towers facility! The reception will be held in the first floor meeting room, room 109. Please come dressed in your favorite JSU Game Day attire. You will be able to tour the new building and all who attend will have the opportunity to leave their mark on JSU Housing's newest community. You'll have to stop by to see what that means!

When you enter the building, please use the doors on the far right side. A housing staff member will be able to let you in, just remember to tell them you are here for the reunion. Parking will be available along Trustee Circle, behind Curtiss Hall, in front of Kennamer Hall and many other places. The Gamecock Express will be available for pick up and drop off as well. Parking is not available at Stadium Tower, those spaces are reserved for club level patrons.

All members participating in Band Camp will move into Dixon Hall, regardless of your fall assignment, on Friday, August 6. Rookies will begin moving in from 10:00am until 12:00pm. Veterans will move in between 2:00pm and 4:00pm. On Monday, August 16, all members will relocate to their fall assignment between 10:00am-12:00pm.

If your fall housing assignment is for Dixon Hall, you will move into your actual room in Dixon Hall on August 6.

We are encouraging Band Camp members to pack lightly and bring only what is essential for camp. You may bring the remainder of your personal items on August 16 and get settled in at that time.

Our first week of Gamecock Orientation has passed and we enjoyed meeting all of you, both parents and students! Here's a recap of what we covered in the Student Services Session, just in case you missed it!

1. EXEMPTIONS: All first year students are required to live on-campus. Students seeking exemption from the first year residency requirement will need to submit an exemption form. Exemptions include students who have graduated high school from one of the following Alabama counties: Calhoun, Cherokee, Cleburne, Etowah, Saint Clair, and Talladega. The remainder of our exemptions can be found on the Request for Exemption form. We must have an exemption form or a residence hall application on file for each entering freshman.

2. ASSIGNMENTS: Our assignments have already been emailed out to those students who applied before our May 1 priority deadline. Students who applied after May 1 are being assigned based off of cancellations. Emails will be sent out periodically throughout the summer. Please check your JSU student email account for updates. Out next emails will go out on July 1 and July 15.

3. FALL 2010 MOVE IN DATES: New Students may move into their fall assignments on Friday, August 20 between the hours of 9:00am-7:00pm. Football move in will be Thursday, August 5. Band Camp move in for rookies will be Friday, August 6, 10am-12pm. Women participating in recruitment will move in on Wednesday, August 18, from 2-5pm.

4. ROOM CHANGES: We are not able to grant room changes at this time. However, students wishing to changes rooms or request a new roommate may submit a Room Change Request form upon arrival on campus. Requests are not guaranteed and if approved, students will be allowed to move during the third full week of classes.

5. SAFETY/SECURITY: Biometric door access controls allow students to gain access to their residence hall. Students will scan their hands before entering the hall. Students who have received their housing assignment email will need to come to the second floor of the TMB before leaving TODAY to have their hand scanned. Students that have not received a housing assignment yet do not need to have their hand scanned today. Students that are not living on campus do not need to have their hands scanned.

6. RESIDENCE LIFE STAFF: If students need assistance, we have professional staff members (Residence Life Coordinators) in place to help, as well as our Assistant Residence Life Coordinators (graduate assistants) and our Resident Assistants (student staff members). Please encourage your student to make contact with their RA and use them as a resource!

7. SHOWROOMS: Our showrooms are open for tours today. Please feel free to visit the residence halls at your leisure. There are signs on the front door of each building that will direct you to the showroom. All buildings will be locked at 6pm.

New Fall/Spring Cancellation Policy

University Housing and Residence Life has recently implemented a new cancellation policy effective immediately. We have provided the detailed information, but should you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Please note: New students applying for fall 2010 and beyond are required to submit a $150 nonrefundable application fee. Students who have submitted the $150 application fee are not eligible for refund of the application fee upon cancellation of housing assignment. Students who have a $100 deposit on file are eligible for refund of deposit upon cancellation of housing assignment.

Fall/Spring Cancellation Policy for New Student Applications:

1. Ten percent (10%) of the housing assignment cost will be assessed to the student’s account if the student cancels their housing assignment after August 1. This also includes students who have an assignment but have not canceled or taken possession of the room.

2. Fifteen percent (15%) of the housing assignment cost will be assessed to the student’s account if the student takes possession of the room or after the first day of move-in, whichever first occurs, but prior to the last day to register.

3. Twenty percent (20%) of the housing assignment cost will be assessed to the student’s account if withdrawal from the university occurs within one (1) week after the close of registration.

4. Fifty percent (50%) of the housing assignment cost will be assessed to the student’s account if withdrawal from the university occurs within two (2) weeks after the close of registration.

5. No adjustment if withdrawal occurs thereafter.

6. For any other situations, not including withdrawals, the students must submit an Agreement Release Request.

Current residents with a $100 deposit will be grandfathered as long as their deposit remains on file. This policy is in conjunction with JSU’s current tuition refund policy for withdrawals.

Several years ago, University Housing and Residence Life held its first annual Pie in the Face for the Human Race event. Students were given the opportunity to put a pie in the face of the Residence Life Coordinator staff. Our recent event was held on Thursday, April 15 on the JSU Quad. Students paid $1 per pie and all proceeds benefited Relay for Life. This year, over $85 was raised for Relay for Life. This event was also held as apart of the annual Resident Appreciation Week. You've Seen Them....Now What?

Last week, small red flags were placed in different locations on campus. They were seen on the Quad, in front of Bibb Graves, the Library, the Alumni House and the TMB. If you drove down Highway 21 any day last week, you probably saw them. And we're sure you were wondering what they meant.

JSU will launch the Red Flag Campaign this week in conjunction with the Clothesline Project and April's National Sexual Assault Awareness Month. According to their website, The Red Flag Campaign is the first statewide public awareness campaign to address dating violence and promote the prevention of dating violence on Virginia’s college campuses, and is now being offered to and launched on campuses nationally.

The Campaign is a project of the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance, and was created by college students, college personnel, and community victim advocates. The Campaign is funded by a generous grant from the Verizon Foundation.

Also from the Red Flag website, Dating violence is defined as controlling, abusive, and aggressive behavior in a romantic relationship. It occurs among people who are heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered, and can include verbal, emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, or a combination of these. College students are at extremely high risk of either acting as perpetrator or being a victim of dating physical or sexual violence during their college years.

Consider the following:
• 32% of college students report dating violence by a previous partner, and 21% report violence by a current partner. *1

• 12% of completed rapes, 35% of attempted rapes, and 22% of threatened rapes occur on a date. *2

• 51% of college males admit perpetrating one or more sexual assault incidents during college. *3

• Females ages 16 to 24 experience the highest per capita rates of intimate violence—at a rate almost triple the national average. *4

The event, which was sponsored by the Office of Student Life, began with a rally and then a barefoot walk around campus. This was a great way of raising awareness for those who experience life, daily, without shoes.

According to the One Day Without Shoes website,

In some developing nations, children must walk for miles to school, clean water and to seek medical help.

Cuts and sores on feet can lead to serious infection.

Often, children cannot attend school barefoot.

In Ethiopia, approximately one million people are suffering from Podoconiosis, a debilitating and disfiguring disease caused by walking barefoot in volcanic soil.

Podoconiosis is 100% preventable with basic foot hygiene and wearing shoes.

Want to know your room assignment?

Students who submit their application and $150 nonrefundable application fee before our May 1 priority deadline will receive their housing assignment on May 15. You will receive an email to your JSU student email account. This email will contain your hall and room number, along with your roommate's name and JSU email address. We encourage students to communicate with each other before arriving to campus, that way you know who's bringing what. Students who apply before May 1 are usually able to get their first and sometimes, second choice. We do our best to honor all roommate requests before May 1 also.

What if I apply after May 1? Don't worry...we're still accepting applications after our May 1 priority deadline. We will continue to make assignments all summer long. We'll be sending out assignment emails every two weeks beginning June 1 for students who apply after May 1. Your email will contain the same information as well...hall and room number with roommate information.

We are very excited about our newest facility, opening fall 2010. The Stadium Housing project is in conjunction with the Stadium Expansion. Stadium Housing offers a state of the art option for our upperclassmen. Students who have achieved sophomore status are eligible to live in Stadium Housing. Our upperclassmen participating in the following programs will also be housed here: academic honors program, Panhellenic sorority women and the Marching Southerners .

Every apartment contains four private bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchenette and common area. Each bedroom is are available, with WiFi provided throughout the building. With convenient access to Paul Snow Stadium, residents are sure to enjoy Gamecock Football events!

Applicants were required to submit an application online. Those who met the minimum requirements of sophomore status and 2.25 GPA then attended Group Process. During Group Process, applicants participated in problem solving and team building activities. The third phase consisted of an interview with the Residence Life Coordinator staff. Resident Assistants receive a housing scholarship for a private room and a monthly stipend. Leadership House

Another exciting Living-Learning Community within the Department of University Housing and Residence Life, is our Leadership House program. The Leadership Houses consist of thirty-two students in two separate communities with one common goal: LEADERSHIP! Our students are actively seeking opportunities to become strong leaders on Jacksonville State University's campus.

We offer the Leadership House for Women and the Leadership House for Men to those students who are seeking opportunities to grow and get involved within our campus community. Sophomores, juniors, seniors and transfer students that have at least a 2.5 Grade Point Average, and at least one semester on campus are eligible to apply.

Requirements include:

1. Residents will agree to reside in their respective Leadership House for the entire academic year.

2. Residents will participate in thirty hours of community service each semester.

3. Residents will be active members of a campus organization, seeking leadership roles where possible.

4. Residents will participate in one monthly program each month, presented by peers in the Leadership House.

5. Residents will attend and participate in the Leadership House retreat.

6. Residents will contribute to a common reading experience throughout the academic year.

7. Residents will participate in a mentor relationship with a freshman student living on-campus.

8. Residents will participate in mid year and end of the year program evaluations.

9. Rising sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible to apply. Transfer students may also apply if eligible.

10. Residents must maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher and have at least one semester on-campus. Transfer students will be considered pending availability.

Celebrate International Week!

The International House is one of many residential options available for students living on campus. From the International House website, this living-learning community, "began in 1946 with five students from France. Initially, the program focused on languages. Today, there are forty members of the program, twenty American students and twenty internationals. Each international student is from a different country and is roomed with an American student. Though emphasis is still placed on languages, greater emphasis is now placed on the overall aspects of cultural understanding. Truly, the International House Program provides 'A Window on the World' for students at Jacksonville State University and the surrounding community."

Exemptions Explained

We know freshman students are getting ready for college, and with that comes many different forms that are required before arriving on-campus. In an effort to make things easier on you, we've tried to explain the exemptions policy below.

All first time freshmen must complete a First Year Student Residency Requirement Exemption Form or a Residence Hall Application/Lease Agreement. The Department of University Housing and Residence Life requires all first year traditional students to live on campus.

However, students who meet the following exemptions are not required to reside on campus. If you do not meet any of these criteria, you will be required to reside on campus.

*Students who meet these exemptions may reside on campus if desired.

1. Students who have lived in a residence hall for two or more complete semesters (two summer sessions are equal to one semester) as verified with record of prior residency.

2. Students who are married or have dependent children as verified with a certified copy of the marriage license or birth certificate.

3. Students who have attained their twenty-first birthday PRIOR to the first day of registration.

4. Students who have graduated from high school in one of the following Alabama counties: Calhoun, Cherokee, Cleburne, Etowah, Saint Clair, and Talladega.

5. Students who, by reason of medical necessity/emergency, require special housing that cannot be provided by University Housing, verified with a statement from the attending physician and approved by a JSU physician.

6. Military Veteran

7. Students taking online classes only.

8. All other exemptions must be approved via the exemption board.

Other items to note:

This exemption form is not a request for the application fee to be waived. All applicants must have a $150 non-refundable application fee on file with their application.

We also send out packets to newly accepted students. The packets contain both, an application and an exemption form. Our office only needs one or other. Please do not submit both.

The Exemption Board meets the second Wednesday of each month. All decisions will be emailed.

If you do not see your specific situation listed above, please submit your request for exemption and provide as many details as possible to support your case.

Should you have additional questions regarding the exemption policy, please don't hesitate to call our office. We can be reached Monday through Friday, from 8:00am-4:30pm, at 256-782-5122.
